This beautiful early 19th-century blue and white transferware meat platter was created by John Rogers and Son. The platter features intricate details and is decorated with ruins near Firozabad, Delhi. This design is inspired by the works of British landscape painter William Hodges (1744–97), who depicted scenes of India during his travels.
The platter showcases a stunning pastoral scene depicting ancient ruins, framed by lush trees and ornate floral details along the border.
The inspiration for this piece traces back to Thomas and William Daniell, two British artists who traveled across India from 1786 to 1794. They created Oriental Scenery, a renowned collection of 144 aquatints published in six volumes in London, which depicted the landscapes and architecture of India in meticulous detail. This platter reflects that British fascination with Indian scenery, merging British craftsmanship with Indian-inspired art.
